In the large hall of the Municipality in Valjevo, a Community Forum was held as part of the regional initiative "Sunny Schools in the Western Balkans." The forum aimed to enhance dialogue and cooperation between the local government and primary schools involved in the project, focusing on identifying and solving key challenges related to introducing and improving ecological practices in educational institutions.
The main idea of the Community Forum was to map the problems each school recognizes as a priority to be addressed, which could be funded using the money saved from installing solar panels. The forum gathered school principals, teachers, students, and parents, who, together with representatives from the City Administration, discussed ways to solve the identified problems. Each school presented specific challenges aligned with the initiative’s criteria, while the principals presented the issues in front of the mayor.
The Mayor of Valjevo personally supported the schools, promising that the identified problems would be addressed in line with the savings generated by solar panels. This approach will allow schools to redirect financial resources toward priorities that are of key importance to students, teaching staff, and the wider community.
This forum was the last activity held in Valjevo within the project "Green Generation: Schools Engaged in Climate Action," as the project now moves to Kragujevac, where similar activities will be carried out with schools from that city.
The forum was a successful step toward improving ecological standards in educational institutions and opened the door for future actions that will contribute to creating greener and more sustainable schools, both in Valjevo and across the Western Balkans.
The initiative "Sunny Schools in the Western Balkans" encompasses not only the installation of solar panels in schools but also an educational program titled "Green Generation: Schools Engaged in Climate Action." This program aims to raise awareness about the importance of energy transition and sustainable development among young people and educational staff. The project is implemented by the Belgrade Open School (Serbia), the National Youth Council of Macedonia (North Macedonia), Bonevet (Kosovo*), the Center for Ecology and Energy (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and the Youth Roma and Egyptian Movement (Albania), with the support of the Open Society Foundation for the Western Balkans.
