The first fundraising campaign "KORNJAČA SPORNJAČA" for the protection and research of marsh turtles, carried out by Young Researchers of Serbia in partnership with the Belgrade Open School and the Special Nature Reserve Kraljevac Lake, has been successfully completed!
The campaign was launched to support the research and protection of marsh turtles (Emys orbicularis) in Serbia, which face serious threats such as pollution, climate change, and habitat loss. The goal was to raise funds for the purchase of GPS devices, which will significantly aid in assessing the species' endangered status in Serbia.
Thanks to the support of donors, including not only individuals but also group donations from citizens, associations, and companies, a total of 840,200 RSD was raised in 77 days, which is 83% of the target amount of 1,010,000 RSD! Although the financial target was not fully reached, the funds raised will enable the purchase of equipment and significant progress in the research and assessment of the marsh turtle's endangered status.
For the first time in Serbia, scientists will be able to use GPS equipment to track marsh turtles inhabiting the Special Nature Reserve "Kraljevac." This is not only a great success for all of us but also an important step toward the long-term conservation of this strictly protected species in Serbia.
During the campaign, Young Researchers of Serbia participated in numerous events to raise awareness about the importance of protecting marsh turtles. They marked World Nature Conservation Day on July 28 at Kraljevac, enjoyed the Meteor Shower on Avala, socialized at the Picnic in Belgrade, and participated in the MaloFest in Kanjiža. We are happy to see that many people showed interest in this collective effort and initiative.
What follows now is the procurement of equipment and the continuation of field research. With the collected data, together with our partners from the "Deliblatsko Jezero" Sports Fishing Association, Belgrade Open School, and the local community, Young Researchers of Serbia will work on renewing green corridors and cleaning turtle passages under roads, which will further contribute to their protection.
There is still much work to be done, but thanks to all of you, we have managed to lay a solid foundation for the long-term conservation of this species, and we would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who supported us and our partners in this pioneering campaign!
