The project "Sustainable Environmental Policy at the Local Level: Towards an Efficient and Responsible Management of Urban Communities in Serbia" has been intended to contribute to improving the participation of citizens in the management of urban communities in Serbia through the development of a sustainable environmental policy and its inclusion in the developmental policies of other sectors at the local level.
The project consisted of the following activities:
Preparing, organizing and conducting four two-month-long campaigns in four local self-governments in Serbia to promote and encourage the participation of all relevant actors at the local level in the preparation of local waste management plans;
Implementing four discussion forums aiming to adopt the recommendations for the development of sustainable and applicable local waste management plans;
Preparing, organizing and implementing training sessions in 4 local self-governments for representatives of local self-government bodies and the business sector on the most important aspects of integrated prevention and control of environmental pollution;
Development and dissemination of waste management public awareness programs.
The project has been implemented in Belgrade, Kucevo, Inđija, Gornji Milanovac, Sabac, Kragujevac, Nis and Bor from April 15, 2010, to February 1, 2011.
ECOLOR from Indjija and Kucevo Enthusiasts from Kucevo have been the partners on the project.
Partners on the project have been the "Tree", Kragujevac; "Free Space", Gornji Milanovac; "Association Rainbow", Sabac; "Resource Center", Bor; "Protekta", Nis.
The Agency for Cooperation with NGOs and European Harmonization of the City of Belgrade and the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce have also been involved as associates in the implementation of this project. It has been carried out with the full support of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
The project has been implemented within the SECTOR II support program for civil society organizations in the field of environmental protection in South East Europe, which is being implemented in Serbia by the Regional Ecological Center.
